Your Questions, Answered
WHAT IS REIKI?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."
WHAT IS A REIKI TREATMENT LIKE?
The client, fully dressed, relaxes on a massage table. The practitioner’s hands are placed on or slightly above the body through several positions from head to toe. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the client needs at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts 45 minutes
There is no manipulation of the skin or tissue. Reiki is not a massage.
Many individuals report feeling a tingling sensation, cold or heat, during a session, and most enter a calm, relaxed state. In some, chronic or acute pain can diminish or completely vanish. Sometimes allergies and other conditions completely disappear. It’s different for each person.
It’s important to remember that, whatever challenge we are experiencing, we did not get it ‘overnight’ and we are not likely to ‘recover overnight’, either. Reiki is not any more magical than any other modality or allopathic medicine. It takes time and commitment to enjoy long term benefits.
ARE THEIR ANY SIDE EFFECTS OF A REIKI TREATMENT?
Most of the time a person will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. However, sometimes a person will have what is called a healing crisis. As a person’s vibration goes up, toxins that have been stored in the body will be released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys and removed from the system. When this happens, sometimes a person can get a headache or stomach ache or feel weak. If this happens, it is a good idea to drink more water, eat lighter meals and get more rest. The body is cleansing as part of the healing process so this is a good sign.
HOW DOES REIKI HELP PEOPLE?
Reiki is a type of energy work that originated in Japan. It’s a simple method of light touch that is based on the Asian concept of ki or life energy. A session feels like a glowing radiance that flows through and around you. The experience is very soothing and results in the client entering a wonderful state of relaxation in which one’s worries and cares seem to melt away.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?
You should find yourself either very relaxed and feeling “lighter” or feeling re-energized. Allow yourself a few minutes to come fully back into your awareness. You may feel so relaxed that you are spaced-out. Whatever it is that you need, is what you will experience.
Be sure to drink lots of water as Reiki is very detoxifying. You should sleep very well.
It is not unusual for people to experience a mild natural detoxification as the body adjusts itself to the energy shift. It is recommended that you drink some extra water and/or herbal tea so that the toxins are flushed out more readily. You may want to rest more, so allow time for that. Doing some simple stretching exercises will help you feel grounded.
Most people feel an immediate improvement in their level of pain and energy. An overall feeling of well being may be experienced.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE A TREATMENT?
Initially, three or four sessions over the first two weeks are recommended. This helps to remove deep-rooted blocks in your energy system. Thereafter, once a week or once every two weeks is recommended, until the issue has resolved. Usually a subtle improvement is noticed even after the first session. It may take five to six visits to notice a marked improvement. Dis-ease generally begins in the energy field so if we keep our subtle bodies healthy using Reiki, and our physical bodies healthy with good nutrition and exercise, we should be able to remain active and whole. Once the initial issue has resolved, most people like to have a Reiki session every 4-6 weeks, as part of their wellness regime.

Reiki is a complimentary and not an alternative to your current medical plan. It is recommended that you continue with any medications you have been prescribed and continue to see your medical practitioner, or other holistic practitioners, unless you first speak with them personally. Reiki works in harmony and compliments all other forms of therapy. Reiki Practitioner does not diagnose nor prescribe – nor does ethics or law allow them to.
Babies, children & pregnant women can benefit immensely from Reiki. Reiki creates a soothing and comforting environment for the whole family. HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR MY REIKI SESSION?
1. Relax + reflect
Give yourself at least 30 minutes prior to the session to sit and reflect, particularly checking in with how your body is feeling and anything you are noticing with regards to emotions, thoughts or physical sensations.
Take some time to breathe and also tend to whatever your body's needs might be on that given day. You may also want to reflect on any intentions you want to set for your session, and anything you want to share with your practitioner before you begin.
2. Eat + hydrate
You’ll want to be sure you've eaten and hydrated a few hours before the session, mostly so you will be as comfortable as possible and not distracted by hunger or thirst.
Avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand, however, as you don’t want all of your body’s energy to be directed toward digesting while you’re receiving your treatment.
3. Get comfy. Most practitioners will have you laying down for the majority of your session, so comfort is key for being open to taking on and integrating the Reiki energy.
Be sure you are wearing comfortable clothes. I usually recommend my clients either wear or bring socks since shoes are removed during the session and the feet can get cold.
